Newcastle United – ‘I’m So Sick Of It All But Can’t Give It Up’
I have never had the urge to send anything in to you guys before but after 30+ years of loyally and proudly supporting my club, I now feel just plain sick and disillusioned with what is happening.
I had, perhaps with hindsight, stupidly bought into the 5 year plan, to bring alleged stability and future success to the club.
I had even stuck up for the owner, arguing that he had at first appeared to run the club the fans way, spent biggish money, but after being stung by deals such as Geremi, Viduka, Smith etc and having been left with debt from prior dealings on Owen, Luque, Boumsong et al, he had decided to pop his business head on and run it in a way he saw fit for the future health of NUFC.
He had gained my credit for trimming the squad following relegation and keeping the players needed to gain promotion which we of course did at a canter. The next two seasons then improved year on year, culminating in a surprise Euro qualification (although I didn’t agree with the sacking of Hughton during this time). At this point all in the garden seemed rosy. Even the harshest Ashley critics were backing down a bit and seemingly agreeing that the plan actually seemed to be working. I remember standing in the sun at Everton, raving to my mates that we were in Europe and it didn’t matter if it wasn’t Champs League as it was all going to be a great adventure and next season may be even better……
Truth is, it wasn’t, to be honest it stank. Instead of a little investment to take us on further, suddenly Europe wasn’t to be treasured, it was an unwanted diversion. Maybe someone was too busy investing in Rangers and we became a mere distraction to him but whatever the reasons, it seems something happened at the end of that season to make us an afterthought to the Ashley empire, apart from him wanting his money back.
We were told that the kids would take us forward, they didn’t, they were exposed for what they were. Inexperienced and not up to it, then when injuries kicked in the squad proved painfully thin. Add in to this season from Hell; the Colo’ drama, the Wigan debacle, Remy gate, the kids with flares and the home results against the unwashed and the red scousers and suddenly the sunshine at Goodison and Euro qualification seemed a million miles away, as we barely survived thanks to other teams failings (though that said one of the failing teams actually won the cup…).
So the dreadful season that was, came to an end and the ‘Manager’ made noises about needing to add to the squad, which I was glad to hear, as surely the Fat Controller would have to agree and spend maybe even £20million of the new TV money, to ensure this couldn’t happen again.
What followed was a pure disgrace and one of the lowest points of my time supporting our club. Not only did we not buy, we appointed a knowledgeless, idiotic, insulting, deranged, clueless knacker as the most important person at the club. A bloke who announced his own appointment, couldn’t be shut up by the media, insulted the fans (who I hope he now apologises to and admits he knows less about football than them), mispronounced key players names and did Duck all, all summer, except a nice family holiday and using the club’s money to jet around Europe.
It’s this insult after the injury of last season that has finally made me admit, I was wrong to ever have faith in this lot and now IS the time to act. The only trouble is, while I genuinely hate the two main players in Ashley and Kinnear (Pardew doesn’t count for me as he is just spineless and a puppet), I will always support my team and the 11 players lucky enough to live my dream every week wearing the black and white. To this end, I couldn’t be part of a boycott, purely for my own selfish reasons. I would support standing outside for ten mins, but if everyone did that, I can’t see the police standing for it and by the time we go in, with no support, the lads could be 2 or 3 down!
I hope there is a way to show our disgust and unite against this vile tyranny as it’s time we did something. Perhaps, at an agreed time in the match, in a similar way to the Gary Speed applause at 11, we could simply all turn our backs to the pitch for a minute while singing something like, turn your back to the lying tw*ts (to tune of stand up if you love the toon etc) or simply the we don’t care about Ashley, he don’t care about me, all we care about is NUFC one.
Or anything that gets the point across.
Whatever happens though, we all need to do something NOW.
