Newcastle Star – ‘Thanks For Believing In Me”

8 years ago

Last night’s win over Leeds was a largely workmanlike affair with Newcastle playing keep-ball for much of the time but it was lit up by two cracking goals.

The first was a flowing move down the left with Dummett to Sammy Ameobi and his cross on the run was powered him via Papiss Cisse’s head.

The second though was a cracking solo effort with Yoan Gouffran bringing back memories of his countryman David Ginola’s strike against Manchester United in that famous 5-0 win.

The striker had a special mention for one of his teammates after the match when speaking to the club website;

“It was great to finally score at St.James’ park and more of a relief than anything else, before tonight I’d only scored away from home so hopefully this frees me up and I will be able to get a few more here.

It was a great win and thankfully we did not fall into the trap of being beaten by a team from a lower division.

We had to get back into a positive frame of mind and back to winning after losing against Hull. Getting a clean sheet was a bonus as well, this game has done everybody’s confidence a lot of good.

I ran to see Big (after scoring) as he’s someone I get on with really well. He is always encouraging me to shoot and so I wanted to go to him and say thanks for believing in me.”

It is hard to see Gouffran getting a regular start but if he scores a few more like that he will give Alan Pardew something to think about and possibly Papiss Cisse will be extra relieved that at last he did put on away after seeing the quality of Gouffran;s finish.

The manager having said last week that Cisse had to start scoring or else.
