Mike Ashley In Line For ‘Personality Of The Year’ Award

Newcastle United owner, Mike Ashley, might not have been sighted at recent matches but he is becoming ever more noticeable in other places.

Mike not like to do things in the orthodox way but that hasn’t stopped him being nominated for a top award.

City A.M. have named Ashley as one of the four nominees for their annual award of ‘Personality Of The Year’.

The candidates are all recognised as major players in ‘The City’ and his three opponents are Mark Carney (Governor of Bank of England), Carolyn McCall (masterminded a year of great success fro Easyjet) and Sir Richard Branson. The last named of course the head of Virgin and ironically the deposed sponsor of Newcastle United thanks to Ashley pulling the plug and getting into bed with Wonga.

The winner will be announced at an awards dinner in November but here is how they describe Mike Ashley;

With his black and white Newcastle United scarf and penchant for drinking pints at football matches, Mike Ashley epitomises the buccaneering dealmaker who is happier on that terraces than in the boardroom. However, behind the everyman image lies a corporate genius who this year has transformed a sports good chain into a FTSE 100 company, all against a backdrop of a high street retail bloodbath. With sales & profits soaring and Ashley’s collection of brands firing on all cylinders, it would take a brave person to bet against Ashley this year.

Maybe the NUFC references are ‘slightly’ out of date but doubts remain as to whether his Newcastle United ‘brand’ is firing on all cylinders.
