Keith Gillespie Reveals What Happened When He Offered Shearer Outside…
It is an incident that has been repeatedly discussed over the years, exactly what happened on the ‘team bonding’ trip to Dublin back in the 90s.
Most versions of the story end with Alan Shearer knocking Keith Gillespie out, though the details often change as to why it happened.
No surprise that Keith Gillespie was keen to use the incident with Alan Shearer to rack up the interest, here’s what happened from the horse’s mouth;
“I was in giddy form and flicking bottle tops in the direction of the other players.
Shearer was hit by a couple and got wound up, which I found enjoyable, so I targeted him and the tension brewed. It then came to a head when I clumsily knocked some cutlery off a table.
‘F****** pick it up’ Shearer snapped.
I thought that he was talking to me like a little boy and shouted back, the red mist descended and we had a bit of a row. For some reason I asked him if he wanted to take it outside. Madness.
We emerged onto a busy street and I took a swing at Shearer but I was punch drunk and not inaccurate.
He responded with a blow that sent me flying against a plant pot, I cracked my head and entered the blackout zone.
The next thing I remember is the view from the hospital bed.”
