Keegan Points The Way
Kevin Keegan challenged young players from the UK to prove to their managers that they are worth a place in Premier League first teams.
Following comments made by FA chairman Greg Dyke concerning the lack of talent from the UK, in particular England, in both Newcastle and Sunderland’s starting XIs, Keegan was quoted as saying that it is up to the players themselves to do something about it.
“Why are these guys coming in from overseas? There is a big wake-up call for the young players in England.
Of the last 60 deals in the transfer window, over 40 of them [players brought to the Premier League] were from overseas. You have to say [to young players in England] ‘what are you going to do about it?’
You can’t say ‘it’s not fair,’ you have to say ‘do you want to train a bit harder? Do you want to concentrate a bit more?’”
