If Gouffran Is The New Lovenkrands Then Shola Must Be…

I was interested to hear Alan Pardew comparing Yoan Gouffran to Peter Lovenkrands earlier today.

Not sure if it was meant to inspire me but it did set off a train of thought, if Gouffran was the new Lovenkrands, who was Shola…

So I’ve went back over the years and picked out some distant, and not so distant, reminders of who our current players remind me of.

Feel free to join in the game, all welcome.

Papiss Cisse – I think he’s looking at the moment, and for much of last season, a bit like a better class Obafemi Martins but one who gives a toss. Martins was a scorer of spectacular goals but who often went missing when not scoring, while Cisse is a scorer of spectacular goals who…

Hatem Ben Arfa – Surely he must be the reincarnation of Laurent Robert, rather than say a Ginola. Ben Arfa, just like Robert, has an end product and tracking back isn’t really his thing, plus a total waste of his talents.

Obertan – Going back a bit further in time, he is the new Franz Carr. Could catch pigeons with his pace but doing something with the ball is a bit beyond him.

Tim Krul – Has to be Shay Given. Both with brilliant reflexes but it is that sheer determination to be the best that marks them both out as something special.

Yohan Cabaye – On a good day he could draw comparisons with the excellent Robert Lee, intelligent and a great passer of the ball, but can also put his foot in. On a bad day I’m starting to have nightmares at times where I see Emre…

Sammy Ameobi – He’s another one who has two sides to him, at times he can go past people like a…somebody quite good, on another day though he brings to mind Fumaca, the only Brazilian who couldn’t play football.

Shola – Well what can you say, which non-goalscoring centre-forward would you pick out? With his longevity he has become something of a house pet, with a couple of curious attributes of usually doing well against the mackems and scores penalties. However, I have to say that amongst others he reminds me of Billy Rafferty, Tony Cunningham, Frank Pingel, Mark Viduka…

Who would you nominate in comparison to our current stars?
