I Am Legend
The word Legend is cheaply used these days, anyone who scores 10 goals in half a season is suddenly a legend in the eyes of the supporters of his club.
For me, I am a bit careful using that word with footballers and other people & celebrities.
There must be something special about the person with this title; either a long successful service to the club, or a wonderful season, or a great occasion where this player won his team a cup after scoring against all odds in the final. You get the picture.
Today we say farewell to a man who doesn’t fit into these conditions, he spent 20 years in a club and played less than 160 games during that time and was the 2nd choice keeper for most of it.
Here is why the man deserves to be a legend. Steve Harper could have left the club and joined any other team for the number 1 jersey and I am not exaggerating that at times, I thought he was better than Shay Given and should have been promoted to be the first choice keeper, which only happened when Given decided he had enough and left us for the City cash bags while the team was fighting relegation from the 3rd game into the season (2 days before the Hull game at home). But soon though the team bounced back with Harper number one after waiting all those years.
We say farewell today to a wonderful man and a great servant to the club, a role model on and off the pitch.
I hope everyone out there at St James’ Park gives him a great cheer and make this moment memorable for a Newcastle United Legend.
Sorry I can’t be there tonight but if Steve wants to have a cold pint in Dubai any time, let me know.
Good luck Stevie
