Hatem Ben Arfa Sets Himself Targets At Newcastle United
Hatem Ben Arfa has shown this week that he is still aiming at the stars, with his driving ambition still to World Player Of The Year.
He has now revealed another target a bit closer to home, his self-imposed goals target for this season.
On form at the beginning of this season with Newcastle, Hatem Ben Arfa finally hopes to make a full and successful season. Particularly in terms of offensive efficiency.
The French international Newcastle knows he must continue down that path. But his current success with his two goals, shows that he is on track:
“I have come to realise that the statistics do a lot for the reputation of a player. I was not really taking this into account before … I’ll have to change that and become more efficient,” he says in the columns of France-Football.
He also discusses his goals forecast for the season:
“I would like to score 15-20 league goals. I’ve never done it but I’ll get there. That does not mean I’m going to play just for me. That means especially in the area of truth, I will now look for the best position to score. This is spontaneous decision making I’m working on in training. The first touch in the box must immediately put me in a position to hit. Before, in front of the goal, I held off too long. Subsequently, I shot when I had no other choice. Now, it has to become an obsession, a reflex. The goal I scored against Fulham, is the example to follow,” he has said.
With two in four Premier League matches he’s made a start but the most he has scored in a season (in all competitions) is 8 in a season, he achieved this once at both Marseille and Lyon. At Newcastle his best return was 6 two seasons ago.
If Ben Arfa can add great goalscorer to his CV as well as scorer of great goals then he would be a phenomenal player. He needs to be encouraged to get in the box as much as possible and Villa showed that he can pick up cheaper goals than his trademark beat everybody else on the other team and then lash it in from outside the box.
If Hatem can score 15+ this season then we’ll definitely be in business – if the rest start and chip in a few as well of course.
With the talent Ben Arfa possesses then the sky really is the limit, as ever it is all down to him.
