Claims of Newcastle Fans ‘Causing Havoc’ En Route To Villa

10 years ago

A regular feature of away matches is coaches of Newcastle fans stopping off on the way to matches for a few drinks.

Down the years different cities/towns/villages have become natural stopping off points for fans, depending on the end destination.

One popular spot is Lichfield and that is where three coachloads stopped off before Saturday’s match at Villa.

The local paper, The Lichfield Mercury, has ran with a headline of ‘Visiting football fans cause havoc on city’s street’.

Not dismissing any major or minor disruption to non-football fans’ lives but I’ll leave you to decide whether there was much ‘causing havoc’ on this particular occasion.

Resident of Lichfield, Annette Rubery;

“Lots of fans were standing around shouting in the street, stopping cars in a huge crowd outside the George & Dragon.

I needed to get to the hairdressers but didn’t dare leave because it was literally happening outside my window.”

Police reported no arrests were made and Inspector Jed White said;

“We’ve had fans stopping off in Lichfield for many years, it was an unusual event for Lichfield to have so many turn up and an element was bent on causing a bit of mischief.

A lot of it was good natured but very loud.”
