Alan Pardew Gets One Thing Right!

We want all of the Newcastle Squad to be busting a gut to get into the team but I had to smile this morning.

Under various titles including ‘Elliot Targets Top Spot’, Rob Elliot has given quotes published today, saying that he is determined to get into Newcastle’s team ahead of Tim Krul and he was ‘disappointed’ not to start the season.

“I was disappointed to be honest with you, not to start the season.

I had a chat with the gaffer (Pardew) and he said, ‘Tim is the number one and so you have to accept that.

Tim has been fantastic  – as he usually is. All I can do is back it up when I get a chance to play and keep doing well in training.

I’d love to get a call-up (Republic Of Ireland) one day but they have got three top keepers and one of them is my best friend inside football, Darren Randolph, so I can’t really complain.”

I hope the reporters kept a straight face because while Rob Elliot seems a canny lad and is an ok fill-in in emergencies, in Tim Krul we have our only real world class player.

The thought of Krul being left out of the team is unimaginable and I’m pleased to see even Alan Pardew can see that.

Elliot completely shatters any decent argument he may have been building when he then talks about his international ambitions. One minute he is talking about getting into Newcastle’s team ahead of one of the best keepers in the world and the next he is saying he understands why he is behind the likes of Darren Randolph in the international team. Randolph spending almost all of his career in non-league and the lower leagues before a few seasons at Motherwell and a handful of matches for Birmingham in the Championship.

If Krul stays fit this season then like Shay Given before him he will be worth at least double figure points to Newcastle over the course of the season.

I sometimes worry when some of our fans seem incapable of seeing the difference between true class players such as Krul and honest triers, surely though there isn’t anybody out there who can’t tell the difference on this one?
