Alan Pardew Coy About Newcastle Offer For Ukrainian Winger
I’m surprised that nothing has appeared in print following a passage of conversation in Alan Pardew’s press conference in advance of the Villa match.
One of the members of the press came up with a topic that at first seemed a little off-subject.
Journalist – “I think a lot of people were surprised at how good the two wide players were for Ukraine against England. It was said a lot of Premier League managers had looked at them, did you look at them in the summer?”
Alan Pardew – “We did actually and they are good players. There was a lot of talk about the national teams this week and it was nice to see England finish the week at the top of their group.”
Journalist – “You say you had a look at those players, was it emmm, I’ll try and get it right…?”
Alan Pardew – (with a smile) “You’re going to try and pronounce them then…”
Journalist – “I’ll try, Konoplienka; did you put a bid in for him?”
Alan Pardew – (Still smiling) “Well, I’m not going to talk about any names because I don’t think it is fair but we looked at all the top internationals that we feel are applicable to us.”
Watching the footage, Alan Pardew seemed a little surprised to be put on the spot and the journalist asking the question appeared to feel that he was onto something. The manager’s expression and reaction leading me to believe that there was substance to the questioning.
I’d like to think there was something in it because somebody such as Yevhen Konoplienka would be a signing who would improve our squad.
Quick and direct he mainly plays in a wide left attacking position and at only 23 has played over 30 times for The Ukraine. Currently playing for Dnipro he has 18 goals in his last 54 matches and has been voted Ukraine’s player of the year in 2010 and 2012.
As the journalist pointed out, the player isn’t an unknown quantity and after the summer we’ve had many fans would be sceptical as to exactly how much Newcastle had offered, even if there had been a bid.
Maybe in January.,..
