Will Newcastle Pay Four Times More For A Player They Chased In January?
I’m assuming that you will all agree that the answer would be a resounding NO to the question posed in the title of this article.
Newcastle United are now being linked with a player they missed out on in January (Bastia confirmed at the time that Newcastle had offered 3m Euros), 20 year old winger Florian Thauvin is now allegedly the subject of numerous bids from Marseille, the latest being £7.5m, and French media sources are claiming Lille would take £13m for a player yet to play a competitive game for them after signing for £3m in January on a temporary loan-back arrangement with Bastia.
This is how we reported the news back in January this year;
A sixth transfer deal of this January transfer window has been stopped in its tracks, ironically by Yohan Cabaye’s old club Lille.
Bastia had earlier confirmed that Newcastle had made a bid of 3m euros with a 15% sell-on clause of any profit for their 20 year old highly rated midfielder, Florian Thauvin. The deal also included the opportunity for Thauvin to be loaned back for the remainder of the season.
When that bid was rejected, it was reported that nothing would now happen until the end of the season.
However, the player has belatedly moved but instead of joining the French contingent at Newcastle, the midfielder has opted to stay and develop in Ligue 1.
The Lille website reports that Thauvin has signed a four and a half year contract but as with Newcastle’s proposed deal, he will stay at Bastia for the rest of the season.
Arsenal were another club who showed interest in Thauvin but guessing that along with Newcastle they won’t be drawn into such an auction for a player whose price tag has risen so quickly.
