The Night Newcastle Were Cheated Out Of Two Trophies – Video Special
A trip to Morecambe sees Newcastle yet again try to improve their dreadful record in the League Cup.
In my years going to the match (I was too young to go to the 1976 Final) it was 1996 when I saw Newcastle come closest to breaking the trophy drought and League Cup one in particular.
Newcastle visited Highbury in the quarter finals and the anger at this match was unbearable, arguably a match that cheated Newcastle out of two trophies, the League Cup and the big prize, the Premier League.
Davide Ginola was absolutely flying and there was clearly a pre-arranged plan to take out the French winger as both Lee Dixon and Nigel Winterburn kicked him off the pitch whichever wing he was on.
The referee was an absolute disgrace that day and after Ginola allegedly retaliated once he was straight off and was never the same after that.
If you don’t have time for the whole video, go to 1.30 for a shocking example of a Dixon assault not even leading to a free-kick, immediately followed by Watson taken out Winterburn.
Then around 4.20 the sending off shenanigans begin and it kicks off everywhere, including the bench.
I still get annoyed just thinking about the injustice of that day!
