The Kids Are (Just) Alright

Well after reading so many negative articles about lack of summer signings, I decided to go to the U21’s game vs Reading last night, hoping it would lift my spirits at the future prospects we have.

I must say it was refreshing to see a game where Newcastle tried to control it, although not looking convincing they certainly played with some heart, which the senior squad seem to lack at times.

Gone backwards?

It did help to give me some hope but one thing is for sure, none of these lads look ready to take the step up – which is what we may need them to do if no more new faces are brought in.

Adam Campbell has been spoken of very highly by Pardew over the past 12 months and he did show some very promising signs tonight, he has a huge amount of pace, stamina and can pick a pass out. However, it was also evident that he does need to go out on loan to a Championship club to get stronger. He was pushed off the ball far too easily and struggled to find space. If this is the case against Reading U21’s I do not think it will improve in the premiership.

Another who looked promising tonight was Adam Armstrong, scoring on his debut with this squad. A year along the line I think I will have far more optimism of what we have coming through but after tonight I am scared for the season ahead.

Last season Bigirimana looked fantastic when he came into the team, yet tonight he blended in with a fairly poor standard of football. What have we done to the lad to see him slip like this? He was a player who I thought up until tonight could be called upon throughout this season when Tiote gets suspended, now I am having second thoughts.

I am trying my best to keep this upbeat and take positives from the club at the moment so I will say this, credit must go to the coaches who are obviously trying to get these lads to keep the ball on the ground and play a passing game, so the future could yet prove to be exciting…but we do need reinforcements for this campaign!
