Premier League Battle Gets Tight

As we prepare for the start of the Premier League season on Saturday, it’s clear that 3 of the biggest stars in Gareth Bale, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez don’t know where they will be playing at the end of the month.

I think the Wayne Rooney saga has had an affect on the Manchester United squad with rumours that senior players are unhappy with Rooney’s attitude. This is not the honeymoon period new boss David Moyes would have hoped for, as at the time of writing no marquee signing has been made. These things considered I can’t back for a repeat performance for the Champions at 9/4.

Manchester City also have a new boss in Manuel Pellegrini but in marked contrast, they have done their business quickly and quietly at the start of the window by bringing in Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Jovetic and most importantly Alvaro Negredo.

Gone are the chaotic days of Tevez and Ballotelli, City have a more solid look to them this season and a good number of their players know what it takes to win it after their dramatic title victory in 2011/12. Manchester City at 9/4 will go very close.

However, the return of Mourinho will galvanise CHELSEA who are my selection this season.

Even with a number of different managers in recent seasons, I’ve been of the view that Chelsea have been very much a work in progress trying to blend new players in with their ageing superstars. I’m in no doubt that their golden generation of Terry, Lampard, Cole and Cech all have at least one more very good season in their legs and players like Mata, Hazard and Oscar will all be wiser now.

Add to that they have the returning Lukaku who scored 17 league goals at West Brom last year and looks a natural heir to Didier Drogba, Chelsea have the feel of real champions again.

Mourinho’s main problem will be how to utilise £50m flop Fernando Torres. Chelsea at 2/1, in what looks a 3 horse race, no longer represent great value but to me they are the likeliest winners.
