Pardew Names Team To Face Manchester City?

When I saw the line-up against Rangers on Tuesday it was clearly Newcastle United’s first team.

However, there was a bizarre exchange after the match following Newcastle being lucky to escape with a draw against Scottish third tier opposition.

This is what I said after Alan Pardew’s interview on the club’s official TV channel;

Tuesday 6th August

When I saw the team line-up before the match it was clearly Alan Pardew’s first team and he was obviously looking to build some momentum with a positive result…a last gasp equaliser at third tier Rangers was not what he had in mind.

Newcastle lined up with Krul, Debuchy, Colo, Taylor, Santon, Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Tiote, Sissoko, Jonas, Cisse…we haven’t got the biggest squad so who exactly would Alan have picked if this had been a competitive game?

So surely the only possibles are choosing between Mapou & Taylor and possibly Gouffran for Jonas – however, Alan Pardew picked out Gutierrez for a special mention after the match so maybe not.

Interviewer; ‘Less than two weeks until the start of Premier League season, did some of your substitutes play their way into your thoughts?’

Alan Pardew “Well….no, because that wasn’t the first team that started, it was the team that started, that’s all. The first team is still to be decided.

Moving on to today’s match against Braga, I think the manager has been careful not to fall into the same trap and named the following starting eleven;

Elliot, Debuchy, Mapou, Coloccini, Santon, Ben Arfa, Tiote, Sissoko, Jonas, Shola, Cisse

While on the bench he has;

Krul, Dummett, Taylor, Marveaux, Cabaye, Anita, Gouffran, Obertan, Sammy Ameobi

Obviously Cabaye and Krul are sure starters at Manchester City if fit, while you would expect Taylor to also get the nod from the manager.

However, I think Alan Pardew has mixed and matched his line-up to avoid over the top criticism if his ‘first eleven’ get the runaround tonight. You would have expected him tonight  to play as close to his team at Man City as possible.

With no other new signings appearing imminent then the manager could be shuffling his same small pack a week on Monday, just as was the case for most of last season.
