Newcastle v West Ham – 20 Years Ago…Surely Not!

Surely it can’t be…a quick check confirms it is though.

I saw the items listed in the latest Mag Auctions and there is a distinct West Ham feel to it, with me being especially drawn towards a programme cover that is now 20 years old! Not a massive step back in time in memorablia terms but in terms of the personal memories it brought back, it only seems like yesterday.

I dragged the programme out myself from my small but perfectly formed collection; September 1993 and recently promoted United were home to the Hammers.

The iconic photo on the cover of Barry Venison with his flowing locks, it certainly put a smile on my face.

What a season that was, promoted Newcastle taking the Premier League by storm and finishing third, plus it was with real style.

Amongst the many excellent players we had the formidable strike duo of Beardsley and Cole.

In that record breaking goals season, Cole got two on this particular day against West Ham.

I had a look at the rest of the Newcastle/West Ham auction items and I’d encourage you to take a look (it’s free), be warned though..when you start looking through these images they conjure up so many memories that you’ll forget that list of jobs your wife (or husband) gave you, so make sure you have real quality time to enjoy the memories.

Down the years Newcastle haven’t shared many players with West Ham but we have some great shared memories.

Most Newcastle fans who know anything about the Hammers, especially if they’ve watched Newcastle there, will have felt a bit of a connection.

A club that personifies its community and fans; you can associate with a lot more than say Chelsea or Spurs.

West Ham’s journey in recent decades has almost mirrored Newcastle’s in terms of highs and lows, plus some great individual players but rarely a great team.

So with the Hammers next up at St.James’ Park we have a West Ham feel to our weekly auctions this time.

Bryan Pop Robson was an obvious to include but we also have Bobby Moore, Andy Cole, and Glenn Roeder and David Kelly featuring.

Having a look costs nothing and with starting prices from 99p it needn’t break the bank if you see anything you fancy.

All items can be viewed HERE.
