The Europa League was repeatedly blamed for just about everything last season, makes you wonder why anybody ever tries to qualify…

After last season’s campaign ended, Alan Pardew declared that as Newcastle didn’t have the pressures of Europe to contend with, United could have a real go at the Cups.

Then reality hits as the manager spoke to NUFC TV…

“We are a little bit short at the minute, so it (Morecambe on Wednesday) is a bit of a worry.

Our fans are desperate to do well in the cup competitions and every time we seem to turn up in them I get a small squad to choose from. So I have to be careful with Fulham three days later.”

We had a small squad last season and now we have an even smaller one, yes I know we have a few injuries but how can it be a surprise to the manager that he turns around with a cup match approaching and sees the likes of Obertan, Amalfitano, Williamson, Gosling, Sammy Ameobi and the rest grinning at him?

Getting rid of first team squad players such as Harper, Simpson and Perch and not replacing them is hardly rocket science is it?
