Newcastle Offered £20m Winger According To Liverpool Reports
While all the focus has been on which striker(s) Newcastle would land, if any, other parts of the team needing strengthening have been assumed to be secondary.
However, surprising reports coming out of Liverpool suggest that Newcastle could be in the market for a £20m winger who hasn’t ever really convinced on Merseyside.
The Liverpool Echo are reporting that Newcastle have confirmed their interest in 29 year old Stewart Downing, signed from Villa for £20m only two years ago.
The reports go on to say that he’d be available for a cut-price £5m and that Liverpool are happy to trade having a number of players ahead of the ex-Smoggie.
A year, or even six months, ago I would have laughed off the idea as Mike Ashley seemed entrenched in only buying players who were young enough and on an upward curve where they’d likely increase in value. Plus have wage demands that could be comfortably met.
However, the on-loan signing of Loic Remy certainly appears to signal a change in direction and if there is any substance to these Downing reports then maybe smallish transfer fees but higher wages are the new order of the day.
More importantly, as fans would Downing improve our squad? Well I think it is a similar story as happened with Andy Carroll, Dalglish spending way over the odds meant that players such as Downing and Carroll were on a hiding to nothing in terms of justifying the money spent.
The winger is a seasoned Premier League player and would be an asset, providing he is an addition and not a replacement for anybody who we’d be loathe to lose….
