Newcastle In Reported £7m Bid For Belgian Striker

A new name (and nationality!) has been thrown into the ring as Newcastle’s search for a striker continues.

Various media are reporting that Newcastle are bidding £7m for Genk striker, Jelle Vossen.

The 24 year old is a Belgian international (2 goals in 11 appearances) though not first choice, no disrespect in that as Belgium have some very good players and could be dark horses to do very well in Brazil next year.

Whether Vossen would be up to the job is obviously an unknown but he has been very consistent over the last few years in the admittedly weak domestic league in Belgium.

The right footed 5ft 11 striker has scored 65 goals in total over the last three seasons and in the league has scored 20, 20 and 17 respectively. You can also assume he puts himself about as in terms of bookings he has picked up 4, 6 and 7 in those same seasons.

The story goes that Newcastle have given up on Gomis and to be honest I’m just sick of that saga anyway, whether United were actually seriously interested and if so – whose fault it is that nothing has happened…past caring.

You assume that Vossen would tick a number of boxes in terms of being able to satisfy wage demands and offering the attraction of playing in the Premier League.

Making the step up, especially as a forward, from weaker European leagues is always a big ask but he has played and scored in the Champions League for Genk and has started the season with two goals in three games so no fitness issues, unlike on-loan Remy.

Whether Jelle will wobble (sorry) over to Tyneside we will have to wait and see but not bringing in at least one other striker is a horrific thought.
