It Will Be Alright On The Night – Starring Alan Pardew

As other clubs have geared up for the new season, their managers have laid out one way or another, how and why they will achieve this season.

Generally the statement of intent will be a combination of accentuating the positives of last season and talking about the new signings they have made to help fix the weaker parts of their squads.

So when it has been the turn of Newcastle United’s manager to bang the drum…?

Well talking about last season’s positives wouldn’t take very long and as for the new signings to correct them – he needn’t even bother opening his mouth.

It’s a bit like arriving in an exotic destination on holiday, only to find that your luggage has ended up on another continent. Newcastle United have basically got the clothes they are stood up in, from last season, and are going to wear them until they fall apart, rather than buying some more and giving the ones they are wearing a canny wash.

So what have we heard from Alan Pardew in the absence of last year’s positives and new signings?

Well, the manager and each of his players in turn have all told us how hard they are working in training. I bet that has the rest quaking in their boots, obviously they’ll have all been lying around in hammocks all summer, drinking cocktails.

In advance of Monday night, Pardew has said that whatever else, it is 11 against 11 when a match kicks off. Well that’s a relief but not really a great game plan.

The manager has also talked about giving City a surprise. I find that even more depressing because what he is basically saying is that he thinks the opposition think we will be rubbish and we are going to shock them by raising our game, hmmm.

No doubt the next thing will be claiming that Newcastle actually have an advantage by not signing anyone because it’s meant everybody already knows each other’s games etc etc.

Will it be alright on the night? Well we have got some good players but they haven’t had one bit of help in terms of team strengthening and many fans have questioned the coaching and tactics, with no visible additions on that front either.
