Football + Knowledge = Money

The start of a new season brings with it all kinds of speculation.

Of course, the transfer window is still open and signings can still be made, but also it opens up the possibility of making a few quid as well using your skill and judgement.

Wolves – ready to bounce back?

We know lots of you like to risk a few quid on the season ahead, trying to identify the clubs and players that give the best value over the next nine or ten months.

With the Football League kicking off this weekend we thought we’d start with a look at League 1 and League 2, so we’ve asked our new resident betting expert, Greg Starand, to cast his eye and bring you the best tips to follow, all odds are courtesy of our betting partner Bet Victor, who we chose because over the last few years they have been identified independently as overall having the best football betting odds of any of the leading bookmakers.

Looking at the potential contenders in this league I immediately want to be with WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS but I was a little disappointed to see them as a general 7/2 shot. However, the rest of the sides all seem much of a muchness and I’d rather have a 7/2 winner than a longer priced loser. Peterborough, Brentford, Sheffield United (won last night in the opening match), Bristol City, MK Dons and Preston North End will all have promotion aspirations but none stick out as front runners to challenge Wolves.  All League One outright odds available HERE.

Wolves seem to have done a good job of retaining their squad thus far and a spine that includes Wayne Hennessy in goal, Roger Johnson at centre back, and the returning loanee Leigh Griffiths up front, look a class apart. It is worth noting that Griffiths scored 23 times in 36 league appearances for Hibernian in the SPL last season and he is bound to be popular in the top goalscorer market at 6/1.If Kevin Doyle does stay past the transfer window then the 16/1 about him could look huge value, although there is talk of a move to Celtic on the horizon.

I’m interested to see big Kevin Davies sign for Preston North End and it will be interesting to see if the fire still burns brightly at this level. He is 20/1 in the top goalscorer market and could give some League 1 defences a torrid time. However, even though this is League 1 he is now 36 and only ever hit double figures, in terms of league goals, once in the last 10 years. All League One Top Goalscorer prices HERE.

League Two Preview

The market for League Two had been centred around Portsmouth at 9/2 with talk of 10,000 season ticket sales and the signing of Monaco player, Romain Padovani. However, I think the new signing will find places like Morecambe, Scunthorpe and Hartlepool are a million miles from the bright lights of Monte Carlo! Pompey are tough to assess following their dramatic fall from grace and don’t forget they were in the Premier League as recently as 2010, but 3 relegations in 4 seasons finds them in the lowest tier. I think they may push for one of 4 promotion spots but I’d rather be against them for the league outright.

Hopes are high that Chesterfield could have a good season after their 8th place finish last time out and they appear to have added to an already decent squad. Jamie Cureton is sure to get goals for Cheltenham and he could be the bet in the top goalscorer market at 16/1. All League Two top goalscorer prices HERE.

However, I’m siding with FLEETWOOD TOWN who can build on a solid start to life in the football league last season. They are an ambitious outfit who could well find themselves playing in the same league as big brothers Blackpool next season. The Cod Army have invested in League Two talent by taking Bury’s Steven Schumacher and Mark Roberts from Stevenage. There has been money for Fleetwood in recent days and as such their odds have contracted to 9/2 but they are the team for the smart money before the season starts.
