Exclusive – Newcastle United’s Shirt Sponsorship Falls By £4m Per Year

For all kinds of reasons it is hard to understand why Newcastle United, or rather Mike Ashley, decided to go with Wonga as a shirt sponsor.

Newcastle/Ashley exercised their right to come out of the deal with Virgin a year early and signed up with the Payday lender.

MPs, fans and even Papiss Cisse have shown their disgust at the nature of Wonga’s business, charging sky high interest rates which simply compound many people’s debt problems.

Many fans will think so what, if the club are getting more money from Wonga then what is the problem?

The only problem is that Newcastle aren’t getting more money and indeed are getting far less.

The respected football finance website Sporting Intelligence have reported that despite this year’s total Premier League shirt sponsorship hitting a record high of £165.75m, Newcastle United’s deal has actually fallen by £4m a season, from Virgin’s £10m to Wonga’s £6m.

Sporting Intelligence put the figures to every club individually and each club approved them.

As well as cutting the Virgin deal short, it was reported at the time that Virgin and Richard Branson were never given the opportunity to ‘compete’ with the Wonga deal.

The Wonga factor will undoubted hit shirt sales to an extent, large or small, which won’t exactly please Puma, amongst others.

Newcastle United’s name has been dragged through the mud yet again by associating with the Payday lender, all the more embarrassing when other clubs responded to fan concerns/disgust and knocked back other companies who charge similar rates of interest.

Less money and all of these other negatives, it is beyond me why Mike Ashley has gone with Wonga but little chance of any explanation coming out of St.James’ Park I bet.
