Another False Trail? – Belgian Striker’s Agent Knows Nothing About Newcastle Interest
Thanks to our man, Paul Benneworth, who keeps an eye on Newcastle related stuff in Holland and Belgium, we have this latest update with regard to yesterday’s news of United’s alleged interest in Genk striker Jelle Vossen.
Jelle Vossen’s name emerged when it became clear that he fitted the age, height and International Cap profile apparently quoted by Kinnear.
Inquiries to Genk revealed that Newcastle had not made an official offer, although yesterday the transfer negotiations with Lyon regarding striker Bafétimbi Gomis fell apart on the price issue. During the Genk-Liege game, unlike previous games, no Newcastle scout announced their presence. That does not mean that there was not an incognito scout or trainer present, possibly in the boxes or business seats with one of the managers.
It is impossible to rule out further action regarding Vossen in the coming weeks. The Genk striker has expressed a desire to take a step up in class, and there is definitely some foreign interest. Earlier this summer, Celtic withdrew from the chase citing too high a price tag. The club from the province of Limburg (ie Genk) want at least seven million pounds for their star player, the HLN editors have been assured.
The considered opinion of the sports desk of Belgian media outfit hln.be ( het laatste nieuws).
According to the English papers the Daily Star and The Sun, Jelle Vosse is on Newcastle United’s radar, but the player’s entourage know nothing. They themselves got in contact with Newcastle but apparently heard that there is no news of a transfer. Unless the English club have used an unofficial agent, then it seems premature to announce a transfer to the Premier League.
