The Most Optimistic Newcastle Fan In The World or Should This Be The Reality?

In less than two years, The Mag website has already featured hundreds of Newcastle fans writing about their club, adding a massive range of opinions to our core of regular writers (Send all contributions for website/magazine to [email protected]).

The latest to try his hand is Shaun McKenna who contributed the following;

Sky Sports have reported that Villa striker Christian Benteke has put in a transfer request.

Now then, seeing as we are in the hunt for a striker with Premier league experience…and a good goalscoring record.

It would be, in my opinion, well worth a bid.

I think he would be just the man to work up front with Cisse, he would also give that much needed push to the other strikers on our books and no doubt lift the fans.

JFK is on his hollies so just go behind his back and sign this player Mr Ashley, give the fans what we want and forget about the price, or forget about finishing in the top ten.

When preparing the piece to go on the website, I (Graham Porter) thought instantly, he’s having a laugh – Newcastle go for Benteke?

Then I thought again and while in our current position there’s no realistic chance of getting the Villa striker ahead of Chelsea, Spurs or whoever, this is exactly the sort of signing we should be aspiring to at St.James’ Park.

I can hear the shouts of we don’t want to go back to the days of Michael Owen, Luque etc. but that isn’t the point here. It should be about wanting to go back to the days of Alan Shearer. Going for the very best we can get and who despite their price tag and wages, will still give you value for money.

It isn’t just £16m and £10m players Newcastle have wasted money on, we’ve signed plenty of players who were a total waste of money at £6m (Barton, Smith etc.) and even players who cost nothing(!), such as Viduka and Geremi.

If a year ago Benteke had already had his cracking debut year in the Premier League then he should have been just the kind of player Newcastle should have targeted to help build on that spectacular jump up to 5th. Newcastle should have gone for somebody of Benteke’s level and added him to the squad, at the same time saying to the likes of Demba Ba that if he was going to continue messing about with his contract then he would no longer be an automatic first choice.
