Reports That Darren Bent Move Depends on Whether Newcastle Land A ‘Mystery French Forward’
Reports in Birmingham suggest that Newcastle United are interested in signing Darren Bent but much could depend on whether Newcastle sign a ‘mystery French forward’ that it is reported they are interested in.
The story from the Birmingham Mail says that Darren Bent is Alan Pardew’s first choice strike target but that this mystery French forward is also in the frame, whether this is pure fantasy or somebody identified by Graham Carr or JFK, who knows?
Bent has been training away from the rest of the first team squad and wasn’t included in the squad that has is currently in Germany for pre-season training and friendly matches.
The report from Birmingham further claims that the wages element won’t be a problem for Newcastle but that the fee might be, with Newcastle not willing to pay the £8m that Villa want.
The departure of Bent is seen as part of a clearout of those players on big money that helped put Villa seventh in the league in terms of wages. The last available figures for the 2011/12 season showed that Villa’s wage bill was £70m, which worked out at £6m more than Newcastle despite the Brummies having a smaller turnover.
Villa have released the likes of Richard Dunne who was out of contract but the likes of Shay Given, Stephen Ireland, Alan Hutton and Darren Bent are all still on massive money despite hardly getting a game between them last season.
