Reported That Newcastle’s Move For Kone Now Pulled By Mike Ashley
Talk about now not knowing whether you are coming or going!
Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct News carried an exclusive earlier today claiming Newcastle had had a bid for Wigan Striker Arouna Kone accepted, this was then followed by BBC Sport confirming that an offer had indeed been made and accepted by WIgan, Kone having a £5m transfer clause in his contract. (See story below)
Now the Chronicle are claiming that Newcastle were interested in Kone, and had been given permission to talk to him, but have now pulled out of the race, allegedly.
A (nother) bizarre day in a Newcastle fan’s life, our race for a transfer target seeing United seemingly never even leaving the stalls…
Earlier today we brought you news that there claims Newcastle had made a bid for Wigan’s 29 year old striker Arouna Kone.
Now BBC Sport’s Phil McNulty has confirmed that Newcastle’s bid for Wigan’s Arouna Kone has been accepted and it is now up to Kone himself to decide.
“Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan is perfectly happy with the offers from both Everton And Newcastle. Will be totally down to Kone to decide.”
It would appear that Kone had a contract clause on relegation where he’d be able to move if anybody offered £5m, so what Dave Whelan would or wouldn’t like to happen is maybe irrelevant.
Whelan isn’t shy of playing games though and interesting to see that Everton’s (ex-Wigan!) manager Roberto Martinez had this to say to the Liverpool Echo when news ‘leaked out’ that the scousers had made a bid;
“Nothing has been confirmed with Arouna (Kone) but it has been made public that we have made an approach and we are still dealing with it.”
Interesting to see how hard Mike Ashley is prepared to go because it would appear fair to assume that the level of wages on offer could be the crucial factor.
