Newcastle United’s Transfer News Laid Bare

11 years ago

I am guided in judging a transfer ‘lead’ by historical precedent. We have seen the following types of saga/surprise in recent years:-

No secret

1. Players we’d take and would come to us if both clubs agree a fee, it’s no secret eg Mathieu Debuchy, Ben Arfa on loan.

2. Players soon to be out of contract that many clubs are interested in and it’s known we are, whose availability is common knowledge eg Moussa Sissoko, Douglas.

3. Players we hear the fee is agreed but terms to be negotiated, medical etc eg Remy, Gouffran, Haidara, Mapou.

4. Players we sign without hearing anything prior to the club announcing eg Ba, Cisse, Santon, Anita, Obertan etc etc.

So if a rumour does not fit the first three above, and most this summer don’t, I suspect from what has been written in the press so far;

Accurate names will be Bent and Tomkins under type 1
No names under type 2
None either under type 3

…and thus the first we’ll hear about type 4 I would think nowadays, will be that sports direct news site that they have been testing with leaks (eg Rooney).
