Newcastle Transfer Bid Turned Down

11 years ago

This morning it was claimed that PSV’s Dutch keeper Jeroen Zoet was on the verge of a £2.5m move to Newcastle.

However, now Talksport are reporting that PSV have turned down a bid for Zoet, which they say was £1.7m, and that in fact PSV are looking to tie the keeper down on a new deal.

This is how we brought you the news this morning and a bit of background on the player;

Zoet is only 22 but has already played 73 times for Eredivisie side, RKC Waalwijk, plus at international level he has been clear first choice for the Netherlands Under 21s and got his first senior international call up at the age of 21.

Clearly a keeper of some promise and at 6ft 3 he looks to have the same winning physique as any number of successful Dutch keepers in the Premier League, including our very own Tim Krul.

Sunderland were strongly linked with Zoet earlier this summer and while he never appeared for PSV, the two seasons out on loan will have really brought him on.

Breaking the story, The Mirror appear to be trying to make this into an ‘undermining Alan Pardew’ story as they are claiming it  being presented as a ‘done deal’ to Alan Pardew from Joe Kinnear & Mike Ashley.

However, it would appear very unrealistic that Graham Carr hasn’t had major input into this deal and Tim Krul’s opinion sought at the very least, plus you would hope/assume it has at least been passed by Alan Pardew.

The story reports Zoet coming in as understudy to Krul and on that basis I think it would be a massive step forward. Yes Rob Elliot seems a dead canny lad and a decent shot stopper but the more games he played towards the end of the season in the Premier League left me with my heart in my mouth much of the time.

The Mirror themselves add a mention of wondering whether this could mean Tim Krul could be on the move and like all fans that would be my only small worry.

Overall though this would be the kind of signing that reassures me there is still some common sense decisions being made at the club and if we can only add 2 or 3 automatic first team level players…
