Mourinho Expresses Admiration For Graham Carr’s Best Ever Newcastle Signing

8 years ago

New (again) Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has singled out one Newcastle player for a special mention.

Defending his managerial record against the charge that he is reluctant to give young players opportunities, Mourinho has pointed to giving Davide Santon his chance as a 17 year old at Inter Milan.

Though when talking to the Italian media, Mourinho makes it clear that it wasn’t the most difficult decision, particularly when Santon then made his full international debut at only 18;

“Whenever I find someone who has everything to become a top player I’ve never held back in giving them a chance, I am talking about Davide Santon who is now at Newcastle.

Santon has suffered two misfortunes, however at 17 years old everybody was saying that he would become for Iner what Paolo Maldini was for AC Milan.

For my money Santon is easily Graham Carr’s best ever buy as Newcastle’s chief talent finder, with the full-back’s recent return to the Italian team proof of that.

Santon is the perfect physical specimen of a modern day footballer, tall but quick and full of confidence at taking opponents on.

The thing is though we are only at the tip of the iceberg with Santon, the more quality players we can get in and around him then we’ll see so much more of the talent that is Davide Santon.
