Defender Previously Linked With Newcastle Has Talked With ‘English Middle Of The Table Clubs’ – Do We Qualify?
Back in May (read below what we said back then), Newcastle United were linked with Senegalese international centre-back, Cheikhou Kouyate, who is 23 years old and can also play as a defensive midfielder.
Now reports have surfaced again with the player due to receive his Belgian passport any day now, which would smooth any transfer to England.
Kouyate has already turned down the chance to move to Dynamo Kiev and his agent leaves no doubt as to which country he is intent on moving to with Bekir Tedik (agent) saying; “He swears by the Premier League.”
Tedik went on to say;
“I will not tell you the name of the clubs but Cheikhou has had previous contact with clubs from the middle of the table in England.
He has not made the choice yet and wants to get the right balance between the football challenge, his family and the financial side of it.”
What we reported in May;
The right footed 6ft 4 defender is also interesting Southampton and Arsenal according to various media reports.
Maybe he’ll prove to be the dominant centre-back Alan Pardew was looking for but with only 3 goals in 114 appearances for Anderlecht, he is unlikely to be curing our set-piece/corner problem single-handedly.
First choice for his club, Kouyate has scored once in thirty one league appearances this season, though he has a disciplinary record averaging only three yellows and no reds over the last few seasons for the Belgian club.
Whether you’d prefer central defenders with a few more cards to their name is a personal preference.
