Darren Bent In, Papiss Cisse Out?
Yesterday the main story in the tabloid press was that Papiss Cisse had allegedly been banished to train alone because he is refusing to wear Wonga branded training and playing kit.
This ‘story’ has dragged on all summer without any quotes whatsoever from the player and no official comment from the club.
So some two months later we don’t even know for sure if it is an issue, and if you do accept there is truth in the speculation, there has been apparently no progress at all in sorting it out before we get to the sharp end where all players and everybody else at the club, should just be tunnel visioned in terms of focusing on being ready for that opening match of the season.

As I say, the story was covered in some detail on [intlink id=”31461″ type=”post”]The Mag website yesterday[/intlink] but with such a lack of reliable information what are fans supposed to do but wonder at what is going to unfold?
My biggest fear when I look at what has and hasn’t happened up to now, is that something really mad is going to happen.
To say ‘really mad’ at our club means we are talking something that is not just average mad, which is the norm throughout our supporting lives.
With strikers Newcastle were allegedly chasing ever decreasing in availability as they are snapped up – Aubameyang, Bony and so on, Darren Bent is now the staple diet for the press as most likely to some to St.James’ Park.
With the club seemingly happy to let the mud continue to be thrown at Cisse with regard to the ‘Wonga row’, I can’t help but think that an attractive proposition (if you are clueless) could have formed in the heads of the people running our club – not many candidates left so you can guess who I mean.
So, how about a scenario where Newcastle sell a 28 year old striker whose form has dipped for over £15m, then buy an England international 29 year old striker with a very good career goalscoring record for around £5m? On the surface you haven’t weakened the team and there is then money left over to buy a defender and some ‘promising youngsters’, without even touching the £20m or so 2013/14 extra broadcasting money that every other Premier League club is investing as a minimum this summer on players.
Papiss Cisse has his critics but this is still a striker who is at the height of his powers for club and country, who just needs a bit of work on his radar to get the goals flowing more frequently.
In simple terms, Papiss Cisse has scored 42 goals for club and country in the last two seasons, while Darren Bent has scored 13.
Darren Bent may very well bounce back to his mackem/Spurs/Charlton form but it is still a risk.
If Bent joins Cisse in the Newcastle squad then it is the kind of risk that every player brings with them, will they/he reproduce the good or bad form that they/he has shown previously?
However, replacing your one true goalscorer with somebody whose best days could be possibly well behind him, well that would be just mad, proper mad.
