Coloccini Selected For Appointment With The Pope
An outstanding season two years ago led to Fabricio Coloccini’s selection as one of the two best centre-backs in the Premier League by his fellow professionals.
That PFA honour was all forgotten as Newcastle’s captain experienced a nightmare 12 months on and off the pitch, Newcastle almost relegated and Colo attempting to leave the club in the middle of a relegation scrap, citing personal reasons.
The 2014 World Cup in Coloccini’s native South America is sure to be the very last chance he’ll have of appearing on that stage and he’s got off to a decent start.
Argentina have a prestige friendly in Italy on August 14 and Colo & Manchester City’s Zabaleta are the only squad members based in England.
The ludicrous timing of such friendlies is at least helped on this occasion for both by the fact that our opening fixture isn’t until the Monday night.
The match will be played in front of Pope Francis at the Olympic Stadium in Rome. The more observant of you will remember of course that as well as also being from Argentina, the latest Pope is a big fan of San Lorenzo, the club who Colo wanted to jump ship to back in January.
