Changed Roles For Ben Arfa & Marveaux Could Fill The Goals Gap

In the 2012/2013 (last) season Newcastle finished 16th with a total of 45 goals for and 68 (3rd worst and more conceded than QPR who finished bottom) against.

In the 2011/2012 season we finished 5th with a total of 56 goals for and 51 against. That’s only 9 goals difference (scored) for us and 17 difference (conceded). So although I would agree that the need for two strikers is a must, I believe that the numbers point out that defensive issues should be the main focus.

Personally, I would forget about wingers, with the depth and quality we have in the middle, bring Ben Arfa/Marveaux in as  inside forwards/ attacking midfielders, especially since HBA doesn’t help Debuchy enough, runs into the corners a lot and is clearly effective running through the centre (Blackburn, Bolton goals).

They would also fill the gap we have behind Cisse; drop Sissoko back into CM with Tiote, Anita or Cabaye (if he stays) and we should be competitive again next year.

One thing that would make a huge difference would be if the time in which the midfield needs to join the attack is reduced; 9-10 seconds to offer the forward/s support is ridiculous; tactics or laziness I don’t know, but it must change.

Set plays too: we didn’t score a single corner last season, that’s on the backroom/coaching staff that one.
