When Newcastle United Took On The Busby Babes – I Was There

My first game was September 1955, I had just turned 9 and my Dad took me to see Newcastle play Manchester United, who included the Busby Babes (Duncan Edwards etc).

I can’t remember much about the game but I know it ended 1-1 and the crowd were incredibly noisy, I also was fascinated by the peanut seller shouting, “peanuts, tanner a bag”.

To a small kid, the players were huge and I was sat on the little wall around the cinder track in the enclosure next to the corner flag, under the stand.

I was told to wait there until it finished, at the end my Dad climbed up and we walked around the cinder track and out.

Been hooked on the Toon ever since.

Happy days.
