Should Newcastle Sign Darren Bent Or Andy Carroll, Or Both….?
It was a moment in football history that many fans won’t forget, where were you when you found out that Liverpool had paid £35m for Andy Carroll?
A player who had made only 33 Premier League appearances and scored 14 top level goals, more than a £1m a PL match or over £2m a goal, depending on how you look at it.
What does seem to get forgotten is that Aston Villa paid an astronomical £24m for Bent in the very same January transfer window as Carroll moved.
A very good goals record but at 27 Bent wasn’t going to improve and any resale value would be a fraction of what Villa paid,as is being proved today.
To think that the best part of £60m was paid for these two players and for some time it has been clear that neither club wants them, surely a clear sign of the madness that exists in English football – and that comes before you take the wages into account.
Personally, I think the Darren Bent transfer was more disastrous because with Liverpool’s profile they are always capable of generating massive amounts of money commercially, far in excess of Villa.
Two questions – which of the 2 strikers would you take to Newcastle (or both?) and which was the biggest transfer disaster of the January 2011 transfer window….we’ll leave Fernando Torres for another day!
