Reported £15m Newcastle Bid For St.Etienne Striker
Newcastle United’s ‘chase’ for a striker continues and after claims of a bid for Marseille’s Gignac, today we are back to the long time linked Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (I know that NUFC have been linked with a player such as him for some time, when I can type his name without having to check the spelling!).
The story this morning is that Eurosport have reported that Newcastle have bid 18m Euros (just over £15m) for Aubameyang who scored 19 times with 14 assists last season for St.Etienne. The ability to do both things (score and turn provider) would suggest he would be ideal to play with Cisse but obviously a few hurdles need to be overcome first.
The Chronicle are a bit more restrained and are reporting that they understand Newcastle are definitely interested in Aubameyang but with no claims of a bid yet. They also say that on the other hand there is no interest from United for Gignac ([intlink id=”30546″ type=”post”]read the thoughts of Marseille fans at the idea of getting £12m for him…[/intlink]) or indeed Wilfried Bony who Newcastle have also been consistently linked with.
With claims that St.Etienne are looking for at least 20m Euros (around £17m) and with a whole host of both Premier League rivals and clubs on the continent linked with the striker, it would take some leap of faith to think Newcastle will land him.
This though is the type of signing that would reassure fans there will be no repeat of last season’s near disaster, but unless Aubameyang is already in the (Newcastle United) bag, then talk of bidding wars and interest from other clubs leaves me less than optimistic.
