Newcastle United First Match Memories – NUFC v Sheffield Utd 1985 (Friendly)
I finally persuaded my parents to take me to St James to see the pre-season friendly v Sheff Utd.
We were sat in the East Stand and I remember I felt miles from the pitch.
Don’t remember much about the game apart from the 1-1 score line and a seemingly small amount of disgruntled chanting from the Strawberry corner. We got back to my Gran’s in Shiremoor after the game to be greeted with ‘well he’s gone then’.
I was like…gone?
To which my Gran replied, ‘well apparently you were all shouting Charlton oot, so hes gone’.
Well she would believe anything Mike Neville told her.
Think it was 1985.
After that I tried not to go to matches with my parents. Sitting down and not swearing was too difficult!
