Here Is The Reaction Of Marseille Fans To Newcastle’s Reported £12m Bid

7 years ago

Late last night we reported that there were claims that Newcastle were bidding £12m for Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac.

Obviously Newcastle being linked with a French player isn’t a novelty these days but to be fair the conversion rates of speculation to reality are better than with recent English recruit speculation!

This is how we gave you the story from the Daily Mail last night;

Having missed out on Loic Remy in the January transfer window it is now reported that Newcastle are bidding £12m for Remy’s ex-team-mate Andre-Pierre Gignac.

The Marseille striker hasn’t been prolific overall in his three years at the French club, scoring 22 goals in 54 starts plus 28 substitute appearances. However, last season he was first choice and scored a very decent 13 goals in 28 league starts.

Gignac is 6ft 1 and 27 years old, which pushes to the extreme Ashley’s alleged upper age restriction on new signings.

Of course with the power of modern technology stories are passed back and forwards between countries/continents and in the early hours of this morning this is how the transfer speculation was discussed on the Marseille Fans’ Forum;

“I would give him a piggyback to Newcastle”

“Oh pi** off! Somebody offering 14m Euros for Gignac! My f****** god, sell sell sell”

“Great if we can replace Gignac, bring in one from abroad”

“If you read this Gignac, thank you for last season but not anything before. With your salary and predictable game you have your limits, you can go. England is cool, you have  a big salary and will move to a club of your heart”

“You and me both amazed if they offer 14m Euros”

“This is serious, 14m Euros for Gignac?”

“I want players who are highly motivated like Gignac, who pour their soul into the club”

“If you take away his (Gignac’s) goals then his contribution to the team is close to nothing, I hate players like him”

“He scored 13 goals with non-existent wingers, plus he was injured for two months. Without injuries he would have scored over 15 goals and like I say, doing it without wingers”

“Gignac has had a good season but 14m Euros…must sell!! His first two seasons were chaotic and if we refuse 14m Euros then we will look like fools when he leaves for 2m/£3m Euros”

As you can see from the comments, despite a decent goal return last season the overwhelming reaction would be to bite Newcastle’s hand off if anything like £12m was on the table.

Some of them are reacting like most of us would if somebody offered £12m for Shola but from others, it sounds like Gignac is a solid but unspectacular player who works best with wingers putting in decent crosses.

Well that should DEFINITELY rule Newcastle out!
