Exclusive – Yohan Cabaye Interviewed – “For The Moment I Am At Newcastle”

Despite a very up and down season blighted by periods of injury and dips in form, Yohan Cabaye’s future is constantly speculated on in the media.

Yesterday we brought you a translation of an interview that Yohan did before France’s match against Uruguay earlier this week, where he talked about the season just gone and the part he played in trying to integrate the new French signings and his struggles with depression, plus even just physically coping with getting through the season.

Interviewed by Canal+, here is the second part of our exclusive translation of the interview, when Yohan Cabaye spoke earlier this week.

(Interview with Gregory Novak from Canal+)

GN “Today we hear about your departure from Newcastle,  at what stage are you, is it likely, is it really likely?”

YC “For the moment I am at Newcastle, you never know what happens in football, I am here at the moment, the season is not finished as I have still two matches (the 2 matches for les Bleus – Uruguay and Brazil), after that going on holiday can’t come soon enough to clear my head of the difficult season we have just had, and I let my agents work for me.”

GN “Can we imagine you coming back to Ligue 1, there are 2 big clubs with  a lot of money – PSG last year and Monaco this year, there is also Marseille that remains a club with French roots…could we see you back in Ligue 1?”

YC “I have had no direct contact with anyone, maybe my agents are currently in the know. As for me, I am here, listening,  I like England as well. I will need to look at the situation but you never know.”

GN “There are changes at a big English club – Manchester United; a change in manager, a change in players, we know it’s a club and a challenge that could interest you?”

YC “Yes of course, I like this club for a long time, I like what they do, the boss has left but they have appointed a very good successor, and he did some very good things with Everton. They are always well placed amongst the big clubs, yes for sure it could be an interesting challenge but like I said for the moment, there is nothing concrete and I am still at Newcastle.”

If/when what Cabaye has said is reported elsewhere, it will no doubt be used to say how he is angling to leave and it is a ‘come and get me’ style interview but when speaking he does sound a bit low and while he isn’t declaring undying love for Newcastle, he doesn’t appear to want to leave Newcastle.

We will only find out as and when a club makes an offer, let’s hope that isn’t on the agenda.

(Then Gregory Novak asks him how he would define/describe the first year with Deschamps. Yohan Cabaye, who is not going to shoot himself in the foot, confirms that the assessment is positive.)

YC “We have beaten some good teams, we’ve also lost matches, but our position in the group remains good. Our objective is to qualify for the World Cup. We have a few matches left to get there, but on the whole it is positive… (reading between the lines, it sounds like Yohan rated Laurent Blanc more than Deschamps!).

YC “The most important is to be in Brazil!”
