Darren Bent Could Tell Us What Mike Ashley’s Ambitions Are

The Summer transfer trading staggers along with Newcastle United remaining the grubby urchin looking in through the window from the outside.

Just like actual matches where there are fifty thousand different points of view, it is the same when it comes to who Newcastle should and shouldn’t buy this close season.

The only thing that unifies almost every fan is that United have to start next season with a stronger squad than that which failed miserably last season.

As you will have noticed, Darren Bent is a player who has been linked with Newcastle in recent days.

None of us know if there is interest from United but it is an easy/obvious story for journalists to write up/make up; an English striker with a great Premier League goals record but who is unwanted by the club who paid £24m for him and reportedly available for around a quarter of the price Villa paid.

So would he be a positive buy for Newcastle United?

Well to me there are three ways of looking at it;

It would be disastrous in terms of ambition, if Newcastle sold Cisse and replaced him with Bent and he was the only striker brought in.

If Bent was the only striker signed and Cisse retained then United would be still left short in my opinion, though I would see this as the bare minimum needed in transfer market (a striker of Bent’s profile/ability added and Cisse & Gouffran retained).

The third position is surely what Newcastle should be striving for; adding somebody such as Bent to Cisse & Gouffran, PLUS adding a striker who would automatically be seen as our number one striker or at the very least on a par with Papiss Cisse. Only that would reassure me that Mike Ashley has any intention of not repeating last summer’s disastrous transfer trading.
