Celebrate Newcastle United’s VE (Victory In Europe) Day

Forty four years ago today, Newcastle United lifted their first (and only…so far) European trophy.

A thrilling run where they beat some of the best teams in Europe, was capped with a brilliant two-legged final win over then Hungarian giants Ujpest Dozsa.

First we bring you the first leg at St.James’ Park on 29th May 1969, sixty thousand crammed onto the terraces as European fever flooded Tyneside.

Big occasions call for big heroes and nobody was bigger for Newcastle United than captain Bobby Moncur.

He’d never scored a first team goal for United but that was all about to change…
