Cabaye Features In Poll To Identify France’s Next Captain

Last season, Yohan Cabaye was given the responsibility of captaining Newcastle United in the absence of Fabricio Coloccini.

With the influx of French players in January, no doubt Cabaye was seen as an essential link in helping those players to adapt quickly, with relegation a distinct possibility.

Now a French website, Maxifoot.fr, have polled the public in France as to who would be the ideal captain of France.

In the poll, 35,162 people voted and PSG’s Blaise Matuidi topped the poll with 28%, closely followed by Hugo Lloris with 27%.

In third you had Franck Ribery (15%) before Yohan appeared in fourth with 9%.

The only others to figure were Mathieu Valbuena (who Newcastle have been linked with, along with the other 368 prospective signings) with 8%, Sakho 6%, and Benzema & Rami with 1% each.

He might not be top of the pile but it is a reminder of Yohan Cabaye’s popularity back home, despite the indifferent season he has just experienced (and of course the fact that he hasn’t stayed behind in Ligue 1).

Whether he is still in line to be Newcastle United’s next captain if Colo leaves, well that’s another matter.

Maybe the captaincy was a step too far last season when it was revealed that our French playmaker had suffered from depression and the strain of non-stop football, including last year’s Euros.
