‘Ant and Dec, Jimmy Nail, Sting, Brian Johnson, Tony Blair, Alan Shearer… Where are you? Let’s be ‘avin you…’
Recent quotes in the media from our (now ex) MD Dorothy Lambada (as the new D of F, MD, coach, chief scout and tea lady liked to call him):
No more crazy, off-the-cuff decisions, no more supporter uproar – The Journal, March 28
Our desire, as we announced back on September, is to bring long-term stability to the Club. It is now up to all of us to work closely as a team to ensure next season sees us competing in the top half of the table again – The Independent, May 23
Honestly? Long-term stability? Working closely as a team? Champion, just what we need!
Fast forward and as I write this less than a month before pre-season starts, we are now suddenly looking for a new MD. Then add the real possibility of losing a manager and chief scout…where has working together for long-term stability gone? Where has the no more crazy off the cuff decisions or supporter uproar gone?
I don’t think those statements could ever apply with Ashley. How has he actually become a billionaire when he isn’t able to stop himself making rash, off the cuff decisions? How has he became a billionaire when he can’t work closely as a team?
The appointment of Joe Pigsear (sorry Joe, it seems to be catching), and the subsequent resignation of Derek Llambias (I got it right!) has highlighted for me the total disregard Ashley appears to have for just about everyone connected to the club, and indeed the club itself.
Stuff working closely as a team, stuff supporter uproar, he’s the boss and he’ll do what he wants. He seems to be using our club as some sort of club for old friends (although I don’t think Llambias would agree!). Well if he’s that bothered about giving an old mate a hand, put him in charge of f***ing Sports Direct then and leave us alone.
The answer to the problem would obviously be for Ashley to sell up. Who would buy is another question, but surely there is enough collective interest to form some sort of co-operative and then run the club on the German model of fan ownership? I think it needs serious consideration, and I know it’s been talked of before, but I’m not sure how serious it got. This time though, enough is enough Mr.Ashley.
So in the best Delia Smith tradition, how about this rallying call to our more affluent supporters for a start…’Ant and Dec, Jimmy Nail, Sting, Brian Johnson, Tony Blair, Alan Shearer… Where are you? Let’s be ‘avin you…’
