A Reminder Of How Lucky We Are To Support Newcastle United

Sometimes it takes somebody looking in from the outside to remind you of what you take for granted.

Fans who haven’t traveled to any/many away matches understandably might not really appreciate what happens on match days.

However, anybody who has ventured to many away matches will know that the day of a home match in Newcastle is pretty special.

While you have an increasing number of stadiums built out of town and/or as part of retail/business parks, we have something really unique in that St.James’ Park is in the very heart of the city.

Take for example a 3pm Saturday kick-off (remember them?), I would say from around 10.30am/11am (opening time!) there is a buzz begins around the streets of our city.

People starting to arrive and taking advantage of all the facilities a major city centre has, the only difference in our case is that you have hundreds of restaurants, cafes and bars within five minutes walk of St.James’ Park.

Try a trip to West Brom, Stoke, Manchester United, Aston Villa and so on – thousands of punters trying to get into one or two pubs and not a single friendly welcome to be seen in many of them.

I don’t expect Newcastle United to win stuff but I do expect them to at least try and challenge, though that’s a discussion for another time.

What we can’t lost sight of though is that we do have something special here and which is the envy of most, thankfully John Hall never quite managed to move us to the Metro Centre!

The official Fulham website has been reviewing future away trips and this is what Fulham fan Daniel Jackson had to say about heading ‘up north’.

Newcastle United – St.James’ Park (Saturday 31st August 2013)

“ I have been to a fair number of away grounds, particularly during our Premier League days, and I have to say that the trip to St.James’ Park is one of my favourites. For me, the atmosphere is up there with anything else I’ve experienced while travelling with Fulham.

“The fans are right at the top of the stand and looking down is quite the sight – although I feel for anyone with a fear of heights! The Newcastle fans make a hell of a noise but I’ve always found that our supporters sing their hearts out up there. It is a ground that expects noise.

“I’ve missed the last two trips, so I can’t wait to get my ticket fro this coming season’s visit. If you only make a handful of away games during the 2013/14 campaign, I’d suggest this as one of them.”
