Video Classic – Newcastle United v Bastia & Johnny Rep 1977 UEFA Cup
I’d been to see Newcastle a number of times already but my first proper season when I saw almost every home match was the relegation team of 1977/78.
Twelve years old and I loved it, the fact we got beat nearly every week was a minor thing at that age, the excitement of standing in the Leazes End was intoxicating.
As always United find ways to find disaster from the most unlikely situation and the relegation season had followed one where Newcastle had finished fifth.
This meant UEFA Cup qualification and one of my big childhood memories.
Irish club Bohemians had been easily overcome but next up we had Corsican club Bastia, who play in the French leagues.
Their star player was the great Johnny Rep, with a class name (especially to a 12 year old) to match his talent.
Rep Played in the Dutch World Cup teams of 1974 and 1978 and also scored the winning goal for Ajax in the final of the European Cup in 1973.
Newcastle took the lead in the away leg but went down narrowly 2-1 in the end, so hopes were high that United could put their league misery to one side and grab a bit of European glory (sounds recently familiar).
Of course it ended in misery but I was captivated by Johnny Rep that night and remember him scoring a goal from miles out, or so I thought, only seeing it in the flesh and never having seen it again until this day.
A real treat for me seeing it after all of these years and now we bring you this brilliant footage from Newcastle v Bastia in 1977.
