Returning Newcastle Star Gets Vote Of Support

Alan Pardew brought back Hatem Ben Arfa, Yoan Gouffran, Danny Simpson and Fabricio Coloccini for the West Ham match.

The manager had been desperate to get his captain back but out of the four recalled players, I doubted the wisdom of the selection when he was going to be up against Andy Carroll.

Not that I wanted Mike Williamson to play but I did think Carroll was one player who Colo wasn’t ideally suited to play against.

Yes Andy Carroll had a couple of chances in the second half as Newcastle conceded free-kicks and territory but overall Coloccini was immense on his return.

He brought a level of calmness to the back four and helped Newcastle actually play it out of defence, instead of what has become a regular diet of long hoofs down the pitch.

In our man of the match poll, Coloccini took a massive 41% of the vote, with Elliot second (21%), Tiote third (11%) and then Ben Arfa and Mapou tied on 8%.

Our captain’s season kind of sums up Newcastle United’s overall; he’s had some decent patchy form, other times been poor, suffered injuries and then of course tried to jump ship in January.

Yesterday reminded us all what a class player he is and whatever happens in the summer Coloccini has to be out on that pitch leading the team to safety.

Newcastle United have looked desperately in need of a leader and hopefully ours has arrived back just in time.
