Pardew To Spring Centre-Back Surprise At West Ham

With Newcastle United at war with certain newspapers, there hasn’t been an awful lot of focus on what will or won’t happen at Upton Park on Saturday.

Maybe it will work in our favour that the players have bizarrely stayed out of the spotlight with regards to Saturday, with the emphasis instead on what Hatem Ben Arfa wore to go to the gym and who talks to who in the dressing room.

Saturday brings a unique challenge with Andy Carroll almost certain to face the visitors, a striker almost unique in the Premier League, a throwback to the old-fashioned target man.

He is decent on the ground but in the air he can be immense, so the question is how and with who, Alan Pardew tries to combat that threat.

All the focus has been on whether Fabricio Coloccini returns but there must be also a shout for Mike Williamson to come back in and go like for like with Carroll.

My feeling is that if Colo fails to make it, I can see Pardew putting in Williamson alongside Taylor with Mapou moving to right-back in place of the suspended Debuchy.

Keeping Carroll quiet could take us halfway to three points, if they don’t handle him though we could be facing disaster.

Anyone for Williamson?
