Pardew Admits One Striker Isn’t Enough

8 years ago

Alan Pardew has today revealed just how much a blow it was when Loic Remy decided not to sign for Newcastle in January.

The fact Remy has ended up as Rangers’ joint top scorer in only a few short months confirms for me that signing him would have made sure we weren’t dragged into the relegation struggle.

This is what the manager said today;

“The fact that we lost out on Remy was a massive blow to our season as we’d lost our main goalscorer and he was the replacement.

He was going to sign for us and at the last minute he changed his mind – that was a massive blow because it is very difficult to bring in a striker in that window.

We then had to go for Moussa (Sissoko) who we’d probably have gone for at the end of the year if we’d got Remy, and he (Sissoo) isn’t a goal scorer, he’s a midfielder come number ten.”

Whatever the financial rewards QPR offered, you do have to have some sympathy for the NUFC hierarchy when a player chooses to sign for a team that are already all but down in January!

However, having hit very very lucky when they got through half a season with Demba Ba their only proper striker, it seems inconceivable that Mike Ashley didn’t deal with the Demba Ba situation last summer and make sure that Newcastle had a third striking option in case Ba did jump ship in January. It isn’t as if they hadn’t had warnings as each transfer window was dominated with talk of whether Ba would stay or not.

Interesting to see as well that Alan Pardew is making clear that Newcastle haven’t signed a goalscorer in Moussa Sissoko, which is patently obvious to anybody who checks his record and has any idea of how he usually contributes on the pitch.

For my money, Alan Pardew is making very clear that he has been left high and dry with only one striker in Cisse and even refers to losing his ‘main goalscorer’ in Demba Ba.

In the past i’m sure Pardew would have come out with some covering waffle for the misguided Ashley transfer policy, along the lines of ‘Sissoko is thriving in his more attacking role with three goals already and I’m sure he’ll score plenty more blah blah blah’.

Goals/Goalscorers win matches and we have very few of either at the moment, whatever else happens in the summer this is a situation that has to be Rem(y)edied!
