Newcastle Linked With 6ft 4″ Centre-Back
In recent days, Alan Pardew reaffirmed his desire to bring in a commanding centre-back who could also add goals, he even went so far as to actually mention the ideal height of 6ft 4″.
Well today, Newcastle United are linked with buying a 6ft 4″ centre-half, though it will take a major diversion from their accepted transfer policy for it to get off the ground.
The player it is claimed United are interested in pursuing is Chris Samba of Queens Park Rangers, though aged 29 and with reported £100,000 a week wages it is hard to imagine it will realistically happen.
Samba always impressed me for Blackburn and when he moved to Anzhi he claimed it was ambition that was the driving force and not the claimed £100,000 a week wages.
However, moving then to QPR who were all but relegated at the time, again for reported £100,000 a week rewards, the supposed chasing of ambition becomes ever more dubious.
The story in the Daily Star also credits Newcastle with retaining an interest in Loic Remy but amongst the many reasons why he would appear to be unlikely to head to Tyneside is the fact he is still on bail after an allegation of rape.
In simple football terms, both players at their best would certainly strengthen Newcastle’s squad but for it to happen Mike Ashley would be ripping up the stated transfer policy – I know what my money would be on.
